ALEBRIJES
OR RIDICULOUS BEAUTIFUL BEASTS

ALEBRIJES: OR RIDICULOUS BEAUTIFUL BEASTS
by GEORGINA ESCOBAR
Oct 17 - Nov 3, 2024
NOTE: FOUR DAYTIME SCHOOL MATINEE PERFORMANCES
REhearsals Begin september 3.
DirecTED BY Marc PInaTE

When a young couple discover the largest Dia de Muertos altar they’ve ever seen, magic begins permeating their world. A little creature, known as an alebrije, sweeps into the room and takes the bride’s imagination, merging past and present in this playful homage to Pedro Linares, the creator of the alebrije. Set in present-day San Luis Potosí, in Xochimilco in 1936, and in an afterlife that looks rather like a psychedelic Oaxacan jungle, young Pedro realizes his artistic potential and creates a cultural legacy. Alebrijes celebrates the beauty and absurdity of life, art, and love, and invites us to consider that death is not a severance, but a shift.

Ensemble of 5 Latine actors with double casting (2 w, 3 m) with 5 roles available.

AVAILABLE ROLES

Pedro Linares (30’s): A cartonero or ‘carton man’ of great big dreams and humble means. He believes everything around him is alive and a source of inspiration.

La Muerte (Any): Lady Death an eager woman with a mission. She’s gracious, a sage, a gardener who is generally peaceful, but sometimes, why not: likes to play games with the living. Strong, vivacious, she is also ill-patient at times. She also does the Offstage voice of Ms. Obregon, Antonio’s mother.

LILLIAN/ALEJANDRA/FLORINDA: Lillian (20’s): A creative writing student. Marrying Antonio this November weekend. Sharp, curious, genuine.
Alejandra Brijeda: Pedro’s love interest and childhood friend.
Florinda “La Pata: A duck. She’s loyal, maternal, but would also fiercely protective. She’s on the lines of a spy-mom, a super-smart duck.

ANTONIO/FELIPE: Antonio (20’s): A visual arts major at UNAM. Has a penchant for street art, and is starting his rise to fame. A gentle Mexican man.
Felipe “El Gallo” Ramirez: A rooster. Pedro’s oldest friend and companion. A bit tattered, oldfashioned, he finds comfort lately, in his fate as a diligent alarm clock.

MANUEL/BARTOLOME: Manuel Linares (20’s): Pedro’s younger brother, a dreamer, wants to be rich, an optimistic gambler. He sometimes comes across as over-confident.
Bartolome “The Gato” (20-30s): An alley cat who’s seen his last 8 lives go by very fast. His fur is tattered and patchy as it’s also the source of Pedro’s brush bristles. Like most Mexican felines, he’s probably more an actual Balam, or Jaguar according to the Mayas, guarding the path of the dead and the living. Skeptical of most things that surround him, he’s jumpy at times he wished he wasn’t.

MacFestival

A celebration of Shakespeare’s Scottish play and its myriad reimaginings

A celebration of Shakespeare’s Scottish play and its myriad reimaginings, all of which examine the nature of power – and to what lengths we’ll go to attain and keep it.

With nearly 50 Broadway revivals since 1768, the New York Times writes “Macbeth is the most instantly accessible of Shakespeare’s tragedies: violent, elemental, familiar, short. No matter which way the story is bent, it maintains its recognizable human core of ambition and regret. Directors can emphasize its witchy aura, its bloodthirsty politics, its marital drama or critique of masculinity without endangering its essential stageworthiness.”

Over the last few years, plays about Macbeth, alluding to Macbeth, invoking Macbeth and even the play Macbeth itself, have been on the S&S Short List for plays to do. At long last, rather than choose one, we have instead decided to take an innovative approach - and go all in. We are holding the first ever, to our knowledge, MacFestival -- two months of plays and events, lectures and artwork, that are tied to the dark and tormented Shakespearean tale about magic, desire, power and corruption.

We will kick off the festival with a (nearly) all-female and non-binary topical telling of the tale, lean and fast-paced. We then will morph into a site-specific journey to the depths of our beloved Historic Y, to present It Is Magic. The festival will include other MacBeth inspired plays like MacBitches, readings like Peerless, lectures and activities. We will wrap up the festival with Five Acts, Five Macs, a mini-festival in itself in which we invite other performing arts companies including Saguaro City Music Theatre, Winding Road Theater Ensemble, and Unscrewed Theater to present their interpretation of an act via their expertise whether puppets, improv, music, physical theater, and more.

NOTE: FOUR DAYTIME SCHOOL MATINEE PERFORMANCES
Rehearsals Begin JANUARY 14th, 2025

We will kick off the festival with a (nearly) all-female and non-binary topical telling of Shakespeare’s darkest and most powerful work, in a cutting that is lean and fast-paced. A tale of witchcraft, prophecy and political ambition, the S&S production will explore the corruption of the trappings of power on the ambitious in a production focused on gender and the systematic forces that bend the individual.

Diverse casting: All ages, ethnicities/races welcome.

IT IS MAGIC

DIRECTED BY BRYAN RAFAEL FALCÓN

From the brilliantly twisted mind of Mickle Maher (There is A Happiness That Morning Is) comes a new dark comedy that challenges the limits of the theatre’s magic while mashing up the curse of the audition, The Three Little Pigs and, curiously enough, Macbeth. At a community theatre audition for a new ‘adult adaptation’ of the Three Little Pigs, two sisters set out to search for an actor to play the role of the Wolf. As they struggle to cast the right actor, they are quickly confronted with the darkness inside the audition room– and themselves.

5 actors (3w, 2m) with 1 role available.
Diverse casting: All ethnicities/races welcome.

TIM PADLEY (20-30s): A young actor auditioning for THE WOLF for an adult version of the Three Little Pigs, and actor playing the Second Murderer in MacBeth.

DIRECTED BY Annika Maher and Zac Austin

When a freshman is unexpectedly given the coveted role of Lady Macbeth, a few upperclassmen actresses invite her over to “celebrate” her casting and reassert their positions at the top of the theater department’s hierarchy. As the Fireball and Svedka flow, the girls interrogate their own sense of ambition as well as the power structures that have shaped their theatrical education.

AVAILABLE ROLES
5 women with 2 roles available.
Diverse casting: All ethnicities/races welcome.

Rachel LaBeau (early 20’s) A senior BFA acting major who takes her work very seriously, she’s going places. She knows she’s the most talented in the room and is the self-proclaimed leader of the group.

Cam Fletcher (early 20’s) A junior BFA acting major and philosophy minor questioning her place. Sad clown of the group, reserved but witty with a tough exterior but a big heart.
