Information on Auditions

The S&S Theatre will hold in-person open auditions for the 2023-24 season on Saturday, April 22nd, from 12:30 to 5:00 PM.

The open auditions will be followed by callbacks on Tuesday, April 25th, & Thursday, April 27th, from 6:00 to 9:30 PM.

All actors who have not worked at the S&S in previous seasons are invited to join us for open auditions. For the open audition, actors should prepare two contrasting monologues, each no more than one minute long.

Actors who have previously acted in an S&S production are able to bypass the open audition process, and we will schedule time for you to read at our callbacks at your request.

Note: If you are aged 8- 18, we will also be holding auditions this fall for our Scamp Company production (this is in addition to our MainStage season auditions). Please stay tuned for later announcements on how to sign up.

PART TWO: Create an AZ Inclusive Casting Platform profile. If you have previously made a profile, please submit a new entry.

After you submit the AZ-ICP profile we will be in contact with you within 48 hours to confirm your audition times.

Other Information

We will be casting from all genders and ethnicities.
BIPOC actors are welcome and encouraged to audition.

All roles are paid an honorarium.

Equity and non-Equity actors welcome.

Please read through our available roles and events so you can indicate your interest when you sign up for auditions.

Rehearsals are generally held Tuesday-Thursday evenings, with daytime rehearsals on Saturdays and Sundays. All rehearsals will be held in person at the S&S Theatre.

24/7 Play Festival @ The Scoundrel and Scamp
WRITTEN, REHEARSED AND PERFORMED ON AUGUST 11-12th, 2023

In just 24 hours, 7 new 10-minute plays are written and performed before an audience, with artists from theaters throughout the Tucson community invited to write, direct, and act.

Seeking 7 playwrights, 7 directors, and 14-21 actors.

A Wrinkle In Time (FULL PRODUCTION)
by James Sie
Runs Oct 26th-nov 12th, 2023.
NOTE: FOUR DAYTIME SCHOOL MATINEE PERFORMANCES
REhearsals Begin september 5th.

The S&S brings this Newberry Award-winning tale, from the beloved children’s book, to life. One of literature's most enduring young heroines, Meg Murry, joins forces with three mysterious witches and her extraordinary brother to battle the forces of evil — and rescue her father, save humanity, and find herself. L’Engle has described her novel as her “psalm of praise to life, [her] stand for life against death.”

Meg Murry (13-20): a very intelligent 13 year-old girl, who has a hard time fitting in at school, and whose physicist father has gone missing.

Charles Wallace Murry (10-15): Meg’s gifted younger brother, who has a keen ability to penetrate and understand the minds of others.

Mr. Murry (30’s-40’s): Meg and Charles’ father, a brilliant physicist who works for the U.S. government.

Mrs. Murry (30’s-40’s): Meg and Charles’ mother, a brilliant scientist and loving mom.

Calvin O’Keefe (13-20): a popular, good-looking schoolmate of Meg’s who gets along with everyone, but feels out of place in his own family.

Mrs. Whatsit (30-60’s): though appearing in many forms, a determined fighter against The Darkness.

Mrs. Who (30-60’s): a mysterious neighbor who speaks mostly in quotes in all languages.

Mrs. Which (30-60’s): the leader of the three Mrs. W’s, wise and mysterious.

Happy Medium (30-70’s): A cheerful medium with a crystal ball that shows all the good and evil things happening in the universe.

Aunt Beast (30’s-40’s): a kind and loving tentacle beast on the planet Ixchel, who nurses Meg back to health.

Red Eyes (20’s-60’s): a mouthpiece through which IT communicates.

 

The INVENTION OF LOVE (Reading)
by TOM STOPPARD
Performed on February 11th
Rehearsals Begin JANUARY 30th, 2024

An imaginative exploration of the life and afterlife of A.E. Housman, one of England's favorite poets, a genius who is completely articulate about academic and literary matters but painfully unable to express his personal feelings and his unrequited passion for classmate Moses Jackson.

Book of Will (FULL PRODUCTION)

After the death of their friend and mentor, William Shakespeare, two of his friends and fellow actors are determined to compile his plays into a folio and preserve the words that shaped their lives. However, fire, warring publishers, and death makes bringing this books to print easier said than done. Amidst the noise and color of Elizabethan London, this hilarious, heartbreaking and award winning play by the playwright of Ada and the Engine finds an unforgettable true story of love, loss, and laughter.

Henry Condell (40’s): Feisty and hopeful, Shakespeare’s friend, and actor in the King’s Men.

John Heminges (50’s): Reasonable and serious, Shakespeare’s friend, and financial manager of the King’s Men. He is a good man, a gentleman, and owner of the Globe Tap House.

Richard Burbage (50’s): A seasoned lion of the stage, loud and proud, Richard is famous across England.

Elizabeth Condell (40’s): Savvy and fun, Elizabeth is Condell’s wife.

Alice Heminges (30’s): John’s daughter and alewife, Alice knows everyone, and hangs with the boys.

Rebecca Heminges (50’s): John’s wife, Rebecca is strong, busy with their grocery business, and a woman who has weathered much but loves her husband, her sons, and God. She is a good wife.

Ben Jonson (50-60’s): Poet laureate of England and friend/rival of Shakespeare, Ben is an amazing drunk, a bear of a man, and surprisingly weepy.

Ed Knight (30’s): “Stage manager” for the King’s Men, Ed is self-serious and particular.

Ralph Crane (18-25): Humble scrivener of the King’s Men, Ralph is quick, sure, and quiet.

William Jaggard (50-60’s): Successful if shady publisher of books, plays, and playbills, William is confident in his ability to get what he wants. He is very experienced, very connected, willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, but an ass.

Isaac Jaggard (30’s): William’s son, Isaac will inherit the business. He is sensitive, an artist at heart.

Marcus (18-25): Printer’s apprentice at the Jaggard print shop, Marcus is nosy but honest.

Compositor (18-25): Works for Jaggard, young.

Emilia Bassano Lanier (50’s): A fiery Italian feminist and poet, Emilia is fifty years old, an independent woman, and a lover of life (and of Shakespeare).

Sir Edward Dering (60’s): A book and theatre lover, Edward is sixty years old and the first customer of The First Folio.

Anne Hathaway Shakespeare (60’s): Shakespeare’s now ailing wife. Anne is strong-willed, a classy lady, a survivor.

Susannah Shakespeare (30’s): A good girl and daughter of Shakespeare.

Boy Hamlet (18-25): A young actor.

 

Red Herring Puppet SERIES

Award Winning puppeteer of stage, film and television, Lisa Sturz, is looking for talent to train towards the performance of shows within the Red Herring Puppets reperatory series, now housed at the Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre. Sign up to audition. No previous puppetry experience necessary. Puppeteers will have opportunities to perform on-site at the S&S, schools, libraries and other locations across Tucson.
