The Legend of La Befana

Join the winner of the UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence, puppetry’s highest honor, Red Herring Puppets, for a holiday adventure!

A children's favorite in Italy, The Legend of La Befana is a popular legend that captures the mystery and majesty of the winter holiday season. In this tale, Befana witnesses a spectacle of stars and a procession of animals, followed by a visit from three Magi. Inspired, she leaves her home in search of the magical infant. Befana travels around the world in her devoted quest but grows weary and is ultimately unable to find the child she seeks. However, she is awakened from her sadness by an angel. Befana overcomes her despair, recognizing the beauty in all children and becoming the beloved gift-giver of Italian lore.

Red Herring Puppet's original production is written by Lisa Sturz with songs by Cathy Riley. Hand-crafted in a Byzantine style, the show includes over 50 puppets — hand, rod, marionette, and bunraku-type figures! The show is a delight for the whole family!

For Scoundrels and Scamps of all ages!
