Rainbow Festival FAQ


General

What is Rainbow in the Old Pueblo?

Rainbow in the Old Pueblo is a two day performing arts festival that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and their stories through performances, art showcases, storytelling and more, all crafted by LGBTQIA+ artists from Arizona.

Where does the Rainbow in the Old Pueblo take place? 

The Rainbow in the Old Pueblo Performing Arts Festival will take place at the Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre at locations across the Historic Y. 

Who will be attending the festival? Who can participate?

Tucsonans who savor the performing arts and appreciate the LGBTQIA+ community will be in attendance. The festival will include all-ages oriented programming in the daytime, with ages 18+ programming in the evening. People are encouraged to participate as performers, exhibitors, vendors and teaching artists.  We anticipate a few hundred visitors to attend the first Rainbow in the Old Pueblo.

Any fees to participate or attend?

To attend, an entrance fee of $15 adult ($10 child)  will get you into one of the three festival “blocks” (Fri Night / Sat Day / Sat Night) or $30 adult ($20 child).

Tickets will go on sale March 1st, 2024.
Performers, Exhibitors, Teaching Artists and Vendors will attend for free.

Do you need volunteers?

Yes! Rainbow in the Old Pueblo is a community endeavor. We need volunteers to help us monitor entrances, answer questions, and keep the event running smoothly. If volunteer please reach out to volunteer@scoundrelandscamp.org.

PERFORMERS

What kind of performers are you interested in for the festival?

We welcome actors, poets, writers, musicians, artists, comedians, drag queens, circus artists and performance artists!

You can apply here to perform!

Will artists/performers be paid?

A small honorarium will be provided for all performers. The amount will range from $50-$100 per person / group. Performers are additionally encouraged to share a Venmo or other payment app with patrons for tips for their performances!

How long is a performance block?

Each performance block will be no longer than 45 minutes, but it can be quite shorter!

What support for tech (lights/sound) will be provided?

For acts in the Mainstage space general lighting wash options will be available for each performance. Sound playback and microphones will be available. For acts in the outdoor performances, speakers will be provided. A technician will run the booth for MainStage act, but for outdoor performances, tech will not be provided beyond setup assistance. 

Is there someone I can talk to about tech support ahead of time?

Yes. Please contact festival@scoundrelandscamp.org ahead of time to discuss your tech needs.

Will all applicants be able to perform?

Space is limited. Applicants will be prioritized based on the following criteria:  

  • How much of your performance reflects/ and or is about the LGBTQIA+ experience? 

  • Do those performing identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community?

  • Does the performance seem “complete” and/or polished enough to be presented on stage.

Note: The festival has daytime slots that must be suitable for all ages. Depending on the content of your act you may be slated to perform in either a daytime (all ages) or an evening (18+) timeslot.

Will I have a place to get ready before the performance?

Yes, a backstage area and dressing room is offered as a space to get ready up to 30 minutes before your performance. Please note: these areas may be shared with another person or group currently performing or performing after you.

Is the performance space accessible?

Our MainStage space is wheelchair accessible and includes backstage and large dressing(holds approximately 8 performers comfortably) room area. All bathrooms are ADA compliant.

Does my act need to be all-ages appropriate?
The festival has daytime slots that must be suitable for all ages and evening slots that are for more adult content. Depending on the content of your act you may be slated to perform in either a daytime (all ages) or an evening (18+) timeslot.
